Lepidosiren paradoxa es la única especie de pescado pulmonar que se encuentra en los pantanos y aguas lentas de las cuencas del Amazonas, Paraguay y del Bajo Paraná, en América del Sur. Notable como respirador de aire obligado, es el único miembro de su familia Lepidosirenidae. Se conoce relativamente poco sobre el lungfish sudamericano. Los nombres comunes adicionales incluyen el fango-pescado americano y el salamanderfish escamoso. En portugués, también se conoce como piramboia, pirarucu-bóia, traíra-bóia y caramuru. El lungfish inmaduro es manchado con oro en un fondo negro; En el adulto, este se desvanece a un color marrón o gris. Sus huesos premaxilares y maxilares con diente se funden como en todos los Dipnoi. Los pulmones de América del Sur también comparten una suspensión de mandíbula autostylic y músculos de la mandíbula aductor potente con el Dipnoi existente. Al igual que los lungfishes africanos, esta especie tiene un cuerpo alargado, casi como una anguila. Puede alcanzar una longitud de 125 cm. Las aletas pectorales son delgadas y filiformes, mientras que las aletas pélvicas son algo mayores y se sitúan muy atrás.
