Los lignanos son un grupo de compuestos químicos que se encuentran en las plantas. Los lignanos vegetales son sustancias polifenólicas derivadas de fenilalanina a través de la dimerización de alcoholes cinámicos sustituidos, conocidos como monolignoles, a un esqueleto de dibencilbutano 2. Esta reacción es catalizada por enzimas oxidativas y es a menudo controlada por proteínas dirigentes. Muchos productos naturales, conocidos como fenilpropanoides, están compuestos de unidades C6C3 derivadas de unidades de cinamilo, así como la química terpénica se basa en unidades de isopreno. Los lignanos son una de las principales clases de fitoestrógenos, que son productos químicos parecidos a los estrógenos y también actúan como antioxidantes.
