La familia del lirio, Liliaceae, consiste en quince géneros y aproximadamente 600 especies de plantas florecientes dentro del orden Liliales. Son geófitas monocotiledóneas, perennes, herbáceas, a menudo bulbosas. Las plantas de esta familia han evolucionado con una buena cantidad de diversidad morfológica a pesar de la similitud genética. Las características comunes incluyen las flores grandes con las partes dispuestas en tres: con seis tepals petaloid coloridos o modelados dispuestos en dos whorls, seis estambres y un ovario superior. Las hojas son de forma lineal, con sus venas generalmente dispuestas paralelas a los bordes, solas y dispuestas alternativamente sobre el tallo, o en una roseta en la base. La mayoría de las especies se cultivan a partir de bulbos, aunque algunos tienen rizomas. Descrito por primera vez en 1789, la familia de los lirios se convirtió en un grupo parafiletico de monocots petaloides que no encajaba en otras familias e incluía un gran número de géneros ahora incluidos en otras familias y en algunos casos en otras órdenes. Consecuentemente muchas fuentes y descripciones etiquetadas "Liliaceae" tratan del sentido más amplio de la familia. La familia evolucionó hace aproximadamente 68 millones de años durante las eras del Cretácico Superior al Paleogene Temprano.
