Un perro pequeño, que son considerados por algunos registros como un perro de juguete y por el American Kennel Club como un perro no deportivo. El Löwchen tuvo una vez la distinción dudosa, como el perro de agua portugués y el Havanese, de ser el perro más raro del mundo. En 1973 sólo había 65 ejemplares registrados de la raza. Incluso hoy en día, la raza generalmente tiene menos de unos pocos cientos de nuevos registros cada año en todo el mundo.
