Es la segunda ciudad más grande del norte de la India después de Nueva Delhi y la undécima ciudad más grande de la India. Está rodeado en el lado del este por el districto Barabanki, en el lado occidental por el districto Unnao, en el lado meridional por Raebareli y en el lado norte por Sitapur y Hardoi.
