Sistema linfático
El sistema linfático es parte del sistema circulatorio, que comprende una red de vasos linfáticos que llevan un líquido claro llamado linfa (de latina que significa agua) direccionalmente hacia el corazón. El sistema linfático fue descrito por primera vez en el siglo XVII de forma independiente por Olaus Rudbeck y Thomas Bartholin. A diferencia del sistema cardiovascular, el sistema linfático no es un sistema cerrado. El sistema circulatorio procesa un promedio de 20 litros de sangre por día a través de filtración capilar que elimina el plasma mientras abandona las células sanguíneas. Aproximadamente 17 litros del plasma filtrado se reabsorben directamente en los vasos sanguíneos, mientras que los restantes 3 litros se dejan en el líquido intersticial. Una de las principales funciones del sistema linfático es proporcionar una ruta accesoria para estos exceso de 3 litros por día para volver a la sangre. La otra función principal es la de defensa en el sistema inmunológico. La linfa es muy similar al plasma sanguíneo pero contiene linfocitos y otros glóbulos blancos. También contiene productos de desecho y restos de células junto con bacterias y proteínas.
