Magnetron de la cavidad
El magnetrón de la cavidad es un tubo de vacío de alta potencia que genera microondas utilizando la interacción de una corriente de electrones con un campo magnético mientras se mueve más allá de una serie de cavidades metálicas abiertas. Los racimos de electrones que pasan por las aberturas a las cavidades excitan las oscilaciones de la onda de radio en la cavidad, algo similar a como las secuencias de una guitarra excitan el sonido en su caja acústica. La frecuencia de las microondas producidas, la frecuencia resonante, está determinada por las dimensiones físicas de las cavidades. A diferencia de otros tubos de microondas, tales como el klystron y el tubo de ondas de desplazamiento, el magnetrón no puede funcionar como amplificador, aumentando la potencia de una señal de microondas aplicada, sino que sirve únicamente como oscilador, generando una señal de microondas de la corriente continua suministrada a la tubo. La primera forma del tubo de magnetrón, el magnetrón de ánodo dividido, fue inventado por Albert Hull en 1920, pero no era capaz de altas frecuencias y era poco utilizado. Los dispositivos similares fueron experimentados con por muchos equipos a través de los años 20 y 30s. El moderno tubo de magnetrón de resonancia fue inventado por John Randall y Harry Boot en 1940 en la Universidad de Birmingham, Inglaterra.
