Espectrometría de masas
La espectrometría de masas es una técnica analítica que produce espectros de las masas de los átomos o moléculas que constituyen una muestra de material. Los espectros se utilizan para determinar la firma elemental o isotópica de una muestra, las masas de partículas y de moléculas, y para dilucidar las estructuras químicas de moléculas, tales como péptidos y otros compuestos químicos. La espectrometría de masas funciona mediante la ionización de compuestos químicos para generar moléculas cargadas o fragmentos de moléculas y la medición de sus relaciones masa-carga. En un procedimiento típico de MS, una muestra, que puede ser sólida, líquida o gaseosa, es ionizada, por ejemplo bombardeándola con electrones. Esto puede hacer que algunas de las moléculas de la muestra se rompan en fragmentos cargados. Estos iones se separan entonces según su relación masa-carga, típicamente acelerándolos y sometiéndolos a un campo eléctrico o magnético: los iones de la misma relación masa-carga sufrirán la misma cantidad de deflexión. Los iones son detectados por un mecanismo capaz de detectar partículas cargadas, tales como un multiplicador de electrones.
