Melanina i / mɛlənɪn / es un término amplio para un grupo de pigmentos naturales que se encuentran en la mayoría de los organismos. La melanina se produce por la oxidación del aminoácido tirosina, seguida por la polimerización. El pigmento se produce en un grupo especializado de células conocidas como melanocitos. Hay tres tipos básicos de melanina: eumelanina, feomelanina y neuromelanina. El tipo más común es la eumelanina, y se produce en subtipos "negro" y "marrón". La feomelanina es un polímero rojo-marrón que contiene cisteína de unidades benzotiazínicas, responsable en gran parte del pelo rojo y las pecas. La neuromelanina se encuentra en el cerebro, aunque su función permanece oscura. La producción de melanina se llama melanogénesis. En la piel, la melanogénesis se produce después de la exposición a la radiación UV, causando la piel para broncear visiblemente. La melanina es un absorbente eficaz de la luz; El pigmento es capaz de disipar más del 99,9% de la radiación UV absorbida. Debido a esta propiedad, se cree que la melanina protege las células de la piel de los daños causados por la radiación UVB, reduciendo el riesgo de cáncer.
