Melanismo
El melanismo es un desarrollo del pigmento melanina de color oscuro en la piel o sus apéndices y es lo opuesto al albinismo. Históricamente, era también el término médico para la ictericia negra. La palabra melanismo se deduce del griego: μελανός, que significa "pigmento negro". El pseudo-melanismo, también llamado abundismo, es otra variante de la pigmentación, caracterizada por manchas oscuras o rayas agrandadas, que cubren gran parte del cuerpo del animal, haciéndolo melancólico. Una deficiencia o ausencia total de pigmentos de melanina se llama amelanismo. El depósito mórbido de la materia negra, a menudo de un carácter maligno que causa los tumores pigmentados, se llama melanosis.
