La proyección de Mercator es una proyección de mapa cilíndrica presentada por el geógrafo flamenco y cartógrafo Gerardus Mercator en 1569. Se convirtió en la proyección de mapa estándar para propósitos náuticos debido a su capacidad para representar líneas de rumbo constante, conocidas como loxodromas o loxodromas como segmentos rectos Que conservan los ángulos con los meridianos. Mientras que la escala lineal es igual en todas las direcciones alrededor de cualquier punto, preservando así los ángulos y las formas de objetos pequeños, la proyección de Mercator distorsiona el tamaño y la forma de objetos grandes, a medida que la escala aumenta desde el ecuador hasta los polos, infinito.
