Los lodazales o lodos, también conocidos como estanques de marea, son humedales costeros que se forman cuando el lodo es depositado por mareas o ríos. Se encuentran en áreas protegidas, tales como bahías, bahías, lagunas y estuarios. Los lodazales pueden ser vistos geológicamente como capas expuestas de lodo de la bahía, resultantes de la deposición de limos estuarinos, arcillas y detritus de animales marinos. La mayor parte del sedimento dentro de un lodo está dentro de la zona intertidal, y por lo tanto el plano es sumergido y expuesto aproximadamente dos veces al día. En el pasado los planos de marea se consideraban insalubres, áreas económicamente poco importantes y con frecuencia eran dragados y se convirtieron en tierras agrícolas. Varias áreas de lodo especialmente poco profundas, como el Mar de Wadden, son ahora populares entre los que practican el deporte de la mudflat senderismo.
