Peptidoglicano
Peptidoglycan, también conocido como murein, es un polímero que consiste en azúcares y aminoácidos que forma una capa de malla fuera de la membrana plasmática de todas las bacterias, formando la pared celular. El componente de azúcar consiste en alternar residuos de N-acetilglucosamina unida a β y ácido N-acetilmurámico. Se une al ácido N-acetilmurámico una cadena peptídica de tres a cinco aminoácidos. La cadena peptídica puede ser reticulada a la cadena peptídica de otra cadena que forma la capa en forma de malla 3D. Algunas Archaea tienen una capa similar de pseudopeptidoglicano o pseudomureína, donde los residuos de azúcar son N-acetilglucosamina unida a β y ácido N-acetiltalosaminurónico. Es por eso que la pared celular de Archaea es insensible a la lisozima. El peptidoglicano desempeña un papel estructural en la pared celular bacteriana, dando resistencia estructural, así como contrarrestando la presión osmótica del citoplasma. Una idea errónea común es que el peptidoglicano da a la célula su forma; Sin embargo, mientras que el peptidoglicano ayuda a mantener la resistencia estructural de la célula, en realidad es la proteína MreB la que facilita la forma celular.
