Mielina
La mielina es un material dieléctrico que forma una capa, la vaina de mielina, por lo general sólo alrededor del axón de una neurona. Es esencial para el buen funcionamiento del sistema nervioso. Es una consecuencia de un tipo de célula glial. La producción de la vaina de mielina se llama mielinización. En los seres humanos, la mielinización comienza en la 14 ª semana de desarrollo fetal, aunque poco mielina existe en el cerebro en el momento del nacimiento. Durante la infancia, la mielinización ocurre rápidamente y continúa a través de las etapas de la vida de los adolescentes. Las células de Schwann suministran mielina a las neuronas periféricas, mientras que los oligodendrocitos, específicamente del tipo interfascicular, mielinizan los axones del sistema nervioso central. La mielina se considera una característica definitoria de los vertebrados, pero las vainas parecidas a mielina también han surgido por evolución paralela en algunos invertebrados, aunque son muy diferentes de la mielina vertebrada a nivel molecular. Myelin fue descubierto en 1854 por Rudolf Virchow.
