Los nabateos, también nabateos, eran un antiguo pueblo semita que habitaba el norte de Arabia y el Levante meridional, sus asentamientos en la CE 37 - c. 100, dio el nombre de Nabatene a la frontera entre Arabia y Siria, desde el Eufrates hasta el Mar Rojo. Su red de comercio poco controlada, que se centraba en cadenas de oasis que controlaban, en donde la agricultura era intensamente practicada en áreas limitadas y en las rutas que los unían, no tenía fronteras bien definidas en el desierto circundante. Trajano conquistó el reino nabateo, anexándolo al Imperio Romano, donde su cultura individual, fácilmente identificada por sus características cerámicas pintadas finamente en maceta, se dispersó en la cultura greco-romana general y finalmente se perdió.
