Como parte del desacuerdo sobre si la selección natural por sí sola era suficiente para explicar la especiación, George Romanes acuñó el término neodarwinismo para referirse a la versión de la evolución defendida por Alfred Russel Wallace y August Weismann con su gran dependencia de la selección natural. Weismann y Wallace rechazaron la idea lamarckiana de herencia de características adquiridas, algo que Darwin no había descartado.
