El neoplatonismo es un término moderno usado para designar una tradición de filosofía que surgió en el siglo III dC y persistió hasta poco después del cierre de la Academia Platónica en Atenas en 529 AD por Justiniano I. Los neoplatónicos fueron fuertemente influenciados tanto por Platón como por el Platónico Tradición que prosperó durante los seis siglos que separaron el primero de los neoplatónicos de Platón. Colectivamente, los neoplatónicos constituyeron una tradición continua de filósofos que comenzó con Plotino. Uno de los rasgos característicos del sistema de Plotino, que también fue retomado por los neoplatónicos subsecuentes, es la doctrina del "Uno" más allá del ser. Para Plotino, el primer principio de la realidad es una subsistencia absolutamente sencilla, inefable, incognoscible, que es a la vez la fuente creadora y el final teleológico de todas las cosas existentes. Aunque, propiamente hablando, no hay nombre apropiado para el primer principio, los nombres más adecuados son "el Uno" o "el Bueno". El Uno es tan simple que ni siquiera se puede decir que exista o sea un ser.
