Nestorianismo
El nestorianismo es una doctrina cristológica avanzada por Nestorius, patriarca de Constantinopla de 428-431. La doctrina, que fue informada por los estudios de Nestorius bajo Theodore de Mopsuestia en la Escuela de Antioquía, enfatiza la desunión entre la naturaleza humana y divina de Jesús. Las enseñanzas de Nestorius lo trajeron en conflicto con algunos otros líderes prominentes de la iglesia, especialmente Cyril de Alejandría, que criticó especialmente su rechazo del título Theotokos para la Virgen Maria. Nestorius y sus enseñanzas fueron finalmente condenados como herejes en el Primer Concilio de Éfeso en 431 y en el Concilio de Calcedonia en 451, llevando al Cisma Nestoriano en el que las iglesias que apoyaban a Nestorio rompieron con el resto de la Iglesia Cristiana. Posteriormente, muchos de los partidarios de Nestorio se trasladaron a Persia Sasánida, donde se afiliaron a la comunidad cristiana local, conocida como la Iglesia de Oriente. En las décadas siguientes la Iglesia de Oriente se hizo cada vez más nestoriana en doctrina, llevándola a ser conocida alternativamente como la Iglesia Nestoriana.
