La enfermedad de Newcastle es una enfermedad contagiosa de las aves que afecta a muchas especies domésticas y aviares salvajes; Es transmisible a los seres humanos. Fue identificado por primera vez en Java, Indonesia, en 1926, y en 1927, en Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Inglaterra. Sin embargo, puede haber sido frecuente ya en 1898, cuando una enfermedad aniquiló todas las aves domésticas en el noroeste de Escocia. Sus efectos son más notorios en aves de corral domésticas debido a su alta susceptibilidad y el potencial de impactos severos de una epizootia en las industrias avícolas. Es endémica para muchos países.
