El arte abstracto utiliza un lenguaje visual de forma, color y línea para crear una composición que puede existir con un grado de independencia de las referencias visuales en el mundo. Las fuentes de las cuales los artistas individuales dibujaron sus argumentos teóricos eran diversas, y reflejaron las preocupaciones sociales e intelectuales en todas las áreas de la cultura occidental en ese momento. El arte abstracto, el arte no figurativo, el arte no objetivo y el arte no representativo son términos vagamente relacionados. Son similares, pero tal vez no tengan un significado idéntico. La abstracción indica un alejamiento de la realidad en la representación de las imágenes en el arte. Esta salida de la representación exacta puede ser leve, parcial o completa.
