La isla de Norfolk es una pequeña isla en el Océano Pacífico situada entre Australia, Nueva Zelanda y Nueva Caledonia, a 1.412 kilómetros directamente al este de la cabeza de Evans, en Australia, ya unos 900 kilómetros de la isla de Lord Howe. La isla es parte de la Commonwealth de Australia, pero goza de un alto grado de autogobierno. Junto con dos islas vecinas, forma uno de los territorios externos de Australia. Tiene 2.300 habitantes que viven en 35 km2. Su capital es Kingston. Originalmente colonizada por los polinesios del Este, la isla de Norfolk fue colonizada por Gran Bretaña como parte de su asentamiento de Australia en 1788. La isla sirvió como condena penal hasta mayo de 1855, con excepción de un hiato de 11 años entre 1814 y 1825, cuando fue abandonado. En 1856 la residencia civil permanente en la isla comenzó cuando fue colocada de Pitcairn. En 1901, la isla se convirtió en una parte de la Commonwealth de Australia que ha permanecido hasta este día. El pino imperecedero de la isla de Norfolk es un símbolo de la isla y por lo tanto representado en su bandera.
