El índice de octano o el índice de octano es una medida estándar del rendimiento del motor o del combustible de aviación. Cuanto mayor sea el número de octanos, más compresión soportará el combustible. En términos generales, los combustibles con una mayor octanaje se utilizan en motores de gasolina de alto rendimiento que requieren mayores relaciones de compresión. Por el contrario, los combustibles con menor índice de octanaje son ideales para motores diesel. Alta compresibilidad de las materias de combustible en proporción a la compresión que el motor está diseñado para generar. El uso de gasolina con números de octano más bajos puede dar lugar a golpes en el motor.
