Okapi
El okapi / oʊkɑːpiː /, también conocido como la jirafa del bosque o la jirafa de la cebra, es un nativo del mamífero del artiodactyl del giraffid a la selva de Ituri, situada en el noreste de la República Democrática del Congo en África central. Aunque el okapi lleva marcas a rayas que recuerdan a las cebras, está más estrechamente relacionado con la jirafa. El okapi y la jirafa son los únicos miembros vivos de la familia Giraffidae. El animal fue traído a la atención europea prominente por la especulación sobre su existencia encontrada en los informes de la prensa popular que cubría los viajes de Henry Morton Stanley en 1887. Los restos de un cadáver fueron enviados más adelante a Londres por el aventurero inglés y el administrador colonial Harry Johnston y se convirtieron en un acontecimiento de los medios en 1901. Un estudio de 2013 determinó que hay 10.000 okapis que permanecen en estado salvaje, frente a los 40.000 hace una década. El mismo año, el okapi fue reclasificado como una especie en peligro de extinción.
