Los olmecas fueron la primera gran civilización en México. Vivían en las tierras bajas tropicales del centro-sur de México, en los actuales estados de Veracruz y Tabasco. Los Olmecas florecieron durante el período de formación de Mesoamérica, datando aproximadamente desde 1500 AEC a aproximadamente 400 AEC. Las culturas pre-olmecas habían florecido en la zona desde alrededor de 2500 aC, pero hacia 1600-1500 a. C., había surgido la cultura Olmeca temprana, centrada en el sitio de San Lorenzo Tenochtitlán cerca de la costa en el sureste de Veracruz. Fueron la primera civilización mesoamericana y pusieron muchos de los cimientos para las civilizaciones que siguieron.
