Oncogén
Un oncogén es un gen que tiene el potencial de causar cáncer. En las células tumorales, a menudo se mutan o se expresan en altos niveles. La mayoría de las células normales sufren una forma programada de muerte. Los oncogenes activados pueden hacer que las células designadas para la apoptosis sobrevivan y proliferen en su lugar. La mayoría de los oncogenes requieren un paso adicional, tal como mutaciones en otro gen, o factores ambientales, tales como infección viral, para causar cáncer.
