El orientalismo es un término usado por los historiadores del arte y los estudiosos de los estudios literarios y culturales para la imitación o la representación de aspectos de las culturas del Oriente Medio y de Asia Oriental por los escritores, los diseñadores y los artistas del oeste. En particular, la pintura orientalista, que representa más específicamente "el Medio Oriente", fue una de las muchas especialidades del arte académico del siglo XIX, y las literaturas de los países occidentales tomaron un interés similar en temas orientales. Desde la publicación del Orientalismo de Edward Said en 1978, muchos discursos académicos han comenzado a usar el término "Orientalismo" para referirse a una actitud general de condescendencia occidental hacia las sociedades de Oriente Medio, Asia y Norte de África. En el análisis de Said, el Oeste esencializa estas sociedades como estáticas y no desarrolladas, con lo que se fabrica una visión de la cultura oriental que puede ser estudiada, representada y reproducida.
