Presión osmótica
La presión osmótica es la presión que debe aplicarse a una solución para evitar el flujo hacia adentro del agua a través de una membrana semipermeable. También se define como la presión mínima necesaria para anular la ósmosis. El fenómeno de la presión osmótica surge de la tendencia de un disolvente puro a moverse a través de una membrana semipermeable y en una solución que contiene un soluto al que la membrana es impermeable. Este proceso es de vital importancia en biología ya que la membrana de la célula es selectiva hacia muchos de los solutos encontrados en los organismos vivos. Para visualizar este efecto, imagine un tubo transparente en forma de U con cantidades iguales de agua en cada lado, separados por una membrana en su base que es impermeable a las moléculas de azúcar. El azúcar se ha agregado al agua en un lado. La altura del agua en cada lado cambiará proporcionalmente a la presión de las soluciones. La presión osmótica hace que la altura del agua en el compartimiento que contiene el azúcar aumente, debido al movimiento del agua pura del compartimiento sin azúcar en el compartimiento que contiene el agua del azúcar.
