Sobredesarrollo
El sobredesarrollo se refiere a una forma de ver la desigualdad global que se centra en las consecuencias negativas del consumo excesivo. Existe como la contrapartida mutuamente constitutiva del concepto más comúnmente conocido de "subdesarrollo". En la teoría del desarrollo dominante, la existencia de estados, regiones o culturas "subdesarrolladas" es vista como un problema que necesita ser resuelto. Los Estados, las regiones, las culturas y las personas se consideran "subdesarrollados" porque no se adhieren a los ideales eurocéntricos de racionalidad, progreso y modernidad asociados con la Ilustración. Por el contrario, el marco del sobredesarrollo cambia el enfoque a los países "desarrollados" del Norte global, preguntando "por qué el consumo excesivo entre los ricos no se considera ante todo como una cuestión de desarrollo". Al cuestionar cómo y por qué se produce un desarrollo desigual en el mundo, se puede evaluar el papel y la responsabilidad del Norte global como "sobredesarrolladores" en la producción de la desigualdad global. De acuerdo con varias encuestas, el consumo no parece hacer feliz a la gente, sino más bien aumentar la huella ecológica de Occidente.
