Capa de ozono
La capa de ozono se refiere a una región de la estratosfera de la Tierra que absorbe la mayor parte de la radiación UV del Sol. Contiene altas concentraciones de ozono en relación con otras partes de la atmósfera, aunque sigue siendo muy pequeña en relación con otros gases en la estratosfera. La capa de ozono contiene menos de diez partes por millón de ozono, mientras que la concentración media de ozono en la atmósfera terrestre en su conjunto es de sólo 0,3 partes por millón. La capa de ozono se encuentra principalmente en la parte inferior de la estratosfera, de aproximadamente 20 a 30 kilómetros sobre la Tierra, aunque el grosor varía estacional y geográficamente. La capa de ozono fue descubierta en 1913 por los físicos franceses Charles Fabry y Henri Buisson. Sus propiedades fueron exploradas en detalle por el meteorólogo británico G. M. B. Dobson, quien desarrolló un espectrofotómetro simple que podría usarse para medir el ozono estratosférico desde el suelo. Entre 1928 y 1958 Dobson estableció una red mundial de estaciones de monitoreo del ozono, que continúan operando hasta el día de hoy. La "unidad de Dobson", una medida conveniente de la cantidad de ozono sobrecarga, se nombra en su honor.
