El Paleogene es un período geológico y sistema que comenzó 66 y terminó 23.03 millones de años y comprende la primera parte de la era Cenozoic. Durando 43 millones de años, el Paleogene es el más notable como el momento en el cual los mamíferos evolucionaron de formas relativamente pequeñas y simples en un grupo grande de animales diversos como consecuencia del evento de extinción Cretácico-Paleógeno que terminó el Período Cretáceo anterior. Este período consiste en las Épocas del Paleoceno, Eoceno y Oligoceno. El final del Paleoceno estuvo marcado por uno de los períodos más significativos de cambio global durante el Cenozoico, el Máximo Térmico Paleoceno-Eoceno, que alteró la circulación oceánica y atmosférica y llevó a la extinción de numerosos foraminíferos bentónicos de aguas profundas y en tierra, Un volumen de negocios importante en los mamíferos. El Paleogene sigue al Período Cretáceo y es seguido por la Época Miocena del Período Neógeno. Los términos "Sistema Paleogénico" y "Sistema Terciario inferior" se aplican a las rocas depositadas durante el "Período Paleógeno".
