Una pegmatita es una roca ígnea holocristalina, intrusiva compuesta de cristales phaneritic entrelazados generalmente más grandes de 2.5 cm de tamaño; Tales rocas se conocen como pegmatitic. La mayoría de las pegmatitas están compuestas de cuarzo, feldespato y mica, que tienen una composición básica similar a la del granito. Se conocen una composición intermedia más rara y pegmatitas máficas que contienen anfíbol, feldespato de Ca-plagioclasa, piroxeno, feldspatoides y otros minerales inusuales, que se encuentran en zonas recristalizadas y apófisis asociadas con intrusiones de grandes capas. El tamaño del cristal es la característica más llamativa de pegmatites, con los cristales generalmente sobre 5 cm en tamaño. Se han encontrado cristales individuales de más de 10 metros de diámetro, y muchos de los cristales más grandes del mundo se encontraron dentro de las pegmatitas. Estos incluyen, spodumene, microclina, berilo y turmalina. De manera similar, la textura y la forma cristalina dentro de la roca pegmatitica pueden llevarse a un tamaño y una perfección extremos. El feldespato dentro de una pegmatita puede exhibir un hermanamiento exagerado y perfecto, laminas de exsolución y, cuando es afectado por la cristalización hidratada, se conoce la textura gráfica macroscala, con feldespato y cuarzo intercalados.
