En la mitología griega, Pelops, era rey de Pisa en el Peloponnesus. Su padre, Tántalo, fue el fundador de la Casa de Atreo a través del hijo de Pelops de ese nombre. Fue venerado en Olimpia, donde su culto se convirtió en el mito fundador de los Juegos Olímpicos, la expresión más importante de la unidad, no sólo para el Peloponeso, "isla de Pelops", sino para todos los helenos. En el santuario de Olimpia, las libaciones nocturnas ctónicas se ofrecían cada vez a Pelops de "cara oscura" en su pozo de sacrificio antes de que fueran ofrecidas en la siguiente luz del día al dios del cielo Zeus.
