Úlcera péptica
Una úlcera péptica es una clara brecha en el revestimiento de la mucosa del estómago o en la primera parte del intestino delgado, resultado de los efectos cáusticos del ácido y la pepsina en el lumen. Histológicamente, la úlcera péptica se identifica como necrosis de la mucosa que produce lesiones iguales o mayores de 0,5 cm. Es la úlcera más común de un área del tracto gastrointestinal que es generalmente ácida y por lo tanto extremadamente dolorosa. Helicobacter pylori es una de las causas más comunes de úlcera péptica. Las úlceras también pueden ser causadas o empeoradas por medicamentos como la aspirina, el ibuprofeno y otros AINE. Cuatro veces más úlceras pépticas surgen en el duodeno -la primera parte del intestino delgado, justo más allá del estómago- como en el estómago mismo. Alrededor del 4% de las úlceras gástricas son causadas por un tumor maligno, por lo que se necesitan biopsias múltiples para excluir el cáncer. Las úlceras duodenales son generalmente benignas. La aparición de una úlcera puede ser el clásico erosivo, cóncavo, cráter-como úlcera o convexa, tal vez parecido a un pólipo colónico. Como generalización, el tipo cóncavo erosivo tiende a situarse en el estómago propiamente dicho mientras que el tipo convexo tiende a encontrarse en el píloro / duodeno.
