Los peritrichs son un grupo grande y distintivo de protozoos ciliados. Por lo general son de campana o disco, con una membrana paroral prominente que surge de la cavidad oral y circunda en sentido contrario a las agujas del reloj alrededor de la anterior de la célula, acompañado de una serie más pequeña de membranelos. La cavidad oral es apical y en forma de embudo, con una vacuola contráctil descargando directamente en ella. Cuando se altera, la parte anterior de la célula puede contraerse. El resto del cuerpo es unciliado, excepto por una banda telotroque que rodea la parte posterior en especies móviles y etapas. El orden más grande de peritrichia es el Sessilida. La mayoría de estos tienen kinetosomas posteriores modificados que secretan un tallo contráctil. La etapa no unida, llamada un telotroch, es sin boca. Estos son comunes en ambientes de agua dulce y marinos, y muchos viven unidos a plantas acuáticas y animales. Son solitarias o producen colonias ramificadas. Algunos secretan una lorica. Vorticella es uno de los géneros más conocidos. Los tallos pueden ser de hasta 2 mm, y en algunos casos donde son altamente contráctiles se puede extender hasta 3 mm. Las otras peritricias constituyen la orden Mobilida.

The peritrichs are a large and distinctive group of ciliate protozoa. They are usually bell or disc shaped, with a prominent paroral membrane arising from the oral cavity and circling counter-clockwise around the anterior of the cell, accompanied by a smaller series of membranelles. The oral cavity is apical and funnel shaped, with a contractile vacuole discharging directly into it. When disturbed, the anterior of the cell can contract. The rest of the body is unciliated, except for a telotroch band circling the posterior in mobile species and stages. The larger order of peritrichia are the Sessilida. Most of these have modified posterior kinetosomes which secrete a contractile stalk. The unattached stage, called a telotroch, is mouthless. These are common in both freshwater and marine environments, and many live attached to aquatic plants and animals. They are either solitary or produce branched colonies. A few secrete a lorica. Vorticella is one of the best-known genera. Stalks may be as long as 2 mm, and in some cases where they are highly contractile can be extended up to 3 mm. The other peritrichia make up the order Mobilida.
