Fosforescencia
La fosforescencia es un tipo específico de fotoluminiscencia relacionada con la fluorescencia. A diferencia de la fluorescencia, un material fosforescente no re-emite inmediatamente la radiación que absorbe. Las escalas de tiempo más lentas de la re-emisión están asociadas con transiciones de estado de energía "prohibidas" en la mecánica cuántica. Como estas transiciones se producen muy lentamente en ciertos materiales, la radiación absorbida puede ser re-emitida a una intensidad más baja durante varias horas después de la excitación original. Los ejemplos más comunes de materiales fosforescentes son los juguetes brillantes en la oscuridad, la pintura y los relojes que brillan durante algún tiempo después de haber sido cargados con una luz brillante como en cualquier lectura normal o luz ambiente. Por lo general, el resplandor se desvanece lentamente en cuestión de minutos en un cuarto oscuro. El estudio de los materiales fosforescentes condujo al descubrimiento de la radiactividad en 1896. Irónicamente, el fósforo blanco no exhibe realmente esta propiedad, sino más bien la quimioluminiscencia.
