La fotoconductividad es un fenómeno óptico y eléctrico en el que un material se vuelve más conductor eléctrico debido a la absorción de radiación electromagnética tal como luz visible, luz ultravioleta, luz infrarroja o radiación gamma. Cuando la luz es absorbida por un material como un semiconductor, el número de electrones libres y los agujeros de electrones aumentan y aumentan su conductividad eléctrica. Para provocar la excitación, la luz que golpea al semiconductor debe tener suficiente energía para elevar los electrones a través de la abertura de banda, o para excitar las impurezas dentro de la brecha de banda. Ejemplos clásicos de materiales fotoconductores incluyen el polímero conductor polivinilcarbazol, utilizado ampliamente en fotocopias; Sulfuro de plomo, utilizado en aplicaciones de detección por infrarrojos, tales como los misiles de búsqueda de calor Sidewinder y Atolón ruso; Y selenio, empleado en televisión temprana y xerografía.
