El fotograbado es un proceso que utiliza un fotorresistente sensible a la luz aplicado a la superficie a ser grabada para crear una máscara que protege algunas áreas durante una operación subsiguiente que graba, disuelve o elimina de alguna manera parte o la totalidad del material de las áreas no blindadas. Normalmente aplicado al metal, también puede ser utilizado en vidrio, plástico y otros materiales. Se selecciona una fotorresistencia que es resistente al ácido particular u otro compuesto de ataque químico que se va a usar. Puede ser un líquido aplicado por cepillado, pulverización, vertido u otros medios y luego se deja colocar, o puede venir en forma de lámina y aplicarse por laminado. A continuación, se expone a la luz -por lo general una fuerte luz ultravioleta- a través de una imagen o patrón fotográfico, impreso mecánicamente o creado manualmente en una película transparente. Alternativamente, se puede usar una lente para proyectar una imagen directamente sobre ella. Típicamente, el material fotorresistente se endurece donde recibe suficiente exposición a la luz, pero algunas fotorresinas son inicialmente duras y luego se suavizan por exposición. Se utiliza un disolvente para lavar las partes blandas, poniendo al descubierto el material subyacente, que después se baña o se rocía con el ácido u otro agente de ataque químico.
