El platino es un elemento químico con el símbolo químico Pt y un número atómico de 78. Es un metal de transición denso, maleable, dúctil, altamente inerte, precioso, gris-blanco. Su nombre se deriva del término español platina, que se traduce literalmente en "plata pequeña". El platino es un miembro del grupo del platino de elementos y del grupo 10 de la tabla periódica de elementos. Tiene seis isótopos de origen natural. Es uno de los elementos más raros de la corteza terrestre con una abundancia promedio de aproximadamente 5 μg / kg. Ocurre en algunos minerales de níquel y cobre, junto con algunos depósitos nativos, principalmente en Sudáfrica, que representa el 80% de la producción mundial. Debido a su escasez en la corteza terrestre, sólo unos pocos cientos de toneladas se producen anualmente, y por lo tanto, es muy valioso y es un importante commodity de metales preciosos.
