En la astronomía, las Pléyades, o Siete Hermanas, es un cúmulo de estrellas abierto que contiene estrellas de mediana edad de tipo B calientes ubicadas en la constelación de Tauro. Es uno de los cúmulos estelares más cercanos a la Tierra y es el grupo más evidente a simple vista en el cielo nocturno. La entidad celestial tiene varios significados en diferentes culturas y tradiciones. El grupo está dominado por estrellas azules y extremadamente luminosas que se han formado en los últimos 100 millones de años. El polvo que forma una débil nebulosidad de reflexión alrededor de las estrellas más brillantes fue pensado al principio como algo que quedó de la formación del racimo, pero ahora se sabe que es una nube de polvo no relacionada en el medio interestelar, a través de la cual las estrellas pasan actualmente. Las simulaciones por ordenador han demostrado que las Pléyades probablemente se formaron a partir de una configuración compacta que se asemejaba a la Nebulosa de Orión. Los astrónomos estiman que el grupo sobrevivirá durante otros 250 millones de años, después de lo cual se dispersará debido a las interacciones gravitatorias con su vecindario galáctico.
