También se conoce como Virginia poke, nightshade americano, cáncer jalap, coakum, garget, inkberry, baya de paloma, pocan, pokeroot, pokeweed, pokeberry, redweed, scoke, tinta roja planta y chui xu shang lu. A veces la planta también se conoce como poke sallet. Partes de esta planta son altamente tóxicas para el ganado y los seres humanos, y es considerado una gran plaga por los agricultores. Sin embargo, algunas partes pueden usarse como alimento, medicina o veneno si se preparan adecuadamente. La planta tiene una gran raíz blanca, tallos verdes o rojos, y hojas grandes y simples. Las flores blancas son seguidas de púrpura a bayas casi negras, que son una buena fuente de alimento para los pájaros cantores tales como Catbird gris, cardenal norteño, Thrasher marrón, y Mockingbird norteño.
