Policarpo era un obispo cristiano del siglo II de Esmirna. Según el Martirio de Policarpo, murió mártir, atado y quemado en la hoguera, y luego apuñalado cuando el fuego no le tocó. Policarpo es considerado como un santo en las iglesias católica, ortodoxa oriental, ortodoxa oriental, anglicana y luterana. Es registrado por Ireneo, que lo oyó hablar en su juventud, y por Tertuliano, que había sido un discípulo de Juan Apóstol. San Jerónimo escribió que Policarpo era un discípulo de Juan y que Juan lo había ordenado obispo de Esmirna. La tradición primitiva que se extendió sobre el Martirio para vincular a Policarpo en la competencia y el contraste con Juan el Apóstol que, aunque muchas personas habían tratado de matarlo, no fue martirizado, pero murió de la vejez después de ser exiliado a la isla de Patmos, Los papiros fragmentarios del lenguaje copto datan de los siglos III a VI. Frederick Weidmann, su redactor, interpreta los "fragmentos de Harris" como la hagiografía de Smyrnan dirigida a las rivalidades de la iglesia de Smyrna-Ephesus, que "desarrolla la asociación de Polycarp y Juan hasta un grado no sabido, hasta donde sabemos, antes o desde entonces".
