Las Polygonaceae son una familia de plantas florecientes conocidas informalmente como la familia knotweed o la familia smartweed-buckwheat en los Estados Unidos. El nombre se basa en el género Polygonum, y fue utilizado por primera vez por Antoine Laurent de Jussieu en 1789 en su libro, Genera Plantarum. La fruta de la uva del mar (Coccoloba uvifera) se come, y en la Florida, la jalea se hace de ella y se vende comercialmente.
