La persona que guía una causa de beatificación o canonización a través de los procesos judiciales requeridos por la Iglesia Católica Romana es conocida como el postulador. Las cualificaciones, funciones y funciones del postulador se especifican en las Normas que deben observarse en las consultas realizadas por los Obispos en las Causas de los Santos, en vigor desde el 7 de febrero de 1983. El peticionario que solicita la beatificación puede nombrar como postulador a cualquiera, Clérigo o no, experto en cuestiones teológicas, canónicas e históricas, y versado en la práctica de la Congregación para las Causas de los Santos, sujeto a la aprobación del obispo. Las principales órdenes religiosas, como los franciscanos, los dominicos y los jesuitas, nombran a los miembros de sus órdenes como postuladores generales que están disponibles para actuar por peticionarios en causas y que desarrollan reputación como expertos en su campo. La etapa posterior de una causa requiere que el postulador resida en Roma, lo que también favorece la asignación del papel del postulador a ese postulador general, ya que la mayoría de las órdenes religiosas mantienen su sede en Roma.
