Los Pirineos
El perro de montaña pirenaico, conocido como los grandes Pirineos en Norteamérica, es una raza grande del perro usada como perro del guarda del ganado. No debe confundirse con el mastín pirenaico. El Gran Pirineo es una raza muy antigua que ha sido utilizada durante cientos de años por los pastores, incluidos los del pueblo vasco, que habitan partes de la región en y alrededor de los Pirineos del sur de Francia y el norte de España. Una de las primeras descripciones de la raza data de 1407, ya partir de 1675 la raza era una de las favoritas del Gran Delfín y otros miembros de la aristocracia francesa. A principios del siglo XIX había un mercado próspero para los perros en las ciudades de montaña, de donde serían llevados a otras partes de Francia. Se desarrolló para ser ágil con el fin de proteger a las ovejas en empinadas laderas montañosas. Hasta 1874, la raza no estaba completamente estandarizada en apariencia, con dos subtipos principales registrados, el occidental y el oriental.
