La pirita mineral, o pirita de hierro, también conocida como oro del tonto, es un sulfuro de hierro con la fórmula FeS2. El brillo metálico de este mineral y la tonalidad amarillo pálido del latón le dan una semejanza superficial al oro, por lo tanto el apodo conocido del oro del tonto. El color también ha llevado a los apodos de latón, brazzle, y Brasil, utilizado principalmente para referirse a la pirita que se encuentra en el carbón. La pirita es el más común de los minerales de sulfuro. El nombre pirita se deriva del griego πυρίτης, "de fuego" o "en fuego", a su vez de πύρ, "fuego". En la antigüedad romana, este nombre se aplicaba a varios tipos de piedras que crearían chispas cuando fueran golpeadas contra el acero; Plinio el Viejo describió a uno de ellos como una bradía, casi con toda seguridad una referencia a lo que ahora llamamos pirita. Según Georgius Agricola, el término se había convertido en un término genérico para todos los minerales sulfurosos. La pirita suele encontrarse asociada con otros sulfuros u óxidos en las vetas de cuarzo, roca sedimentaria y roca metamórfica, así como en los lechos de carbón y como un mineral de reemplazo en los fósiles.
