En física, las cuasiparticulas y las excitaciones colectivas son fenómenos emergentes que ocurren cuando un sistema microscópicamente complicado como un sólido se comporta como si contenía partículas débilmente interactivas en el espacio libre. Por ejemplo, cuando un electrón viaja a través de un semiconductor, su movimiento es perturbado de una manera compleja por sus interacciones con todos los otros electrones y núcleos; Sin embargo se comporta aproximadamente como un electrón con una masa diferente viajando imperturbable a través del espacio libre. Este "electrón" con una masa diferente se llama una "cuasipartida de electrones". En otro ejemplo, el movimiento agregado de electrones en la banda de valencia de un semiconductor es el mismo que si el semiconductor contenía en cambio las cuasipartículas cargadas positivamente llamadas agujeros. Otras cuasipartículas o excitaciones colectivas incluyen fonones, plasmones y muchos otros. Estas partículas se denominan típicamente "cuasiparticulares" si están relacionadas con los fermiones, y llamadas "excitaciones colectivas" si están relacionadas con los bosones, aunque la distinción precisa no está universalmente aceptada.
