La datación por radiocarbono es una técnica de datación radiométrica que utiliza la desintegración del carbono-14 para estimar la edad de los materiales orgánicos, como la madera y el cuero, hasta aproximadamente 58.000 a 62.000 años. Carbon dating fue presentada al mundo por Willard Libby en 1949, por la que fue galardonado con el Premio Nobel de Química. Desde la introducción de la datación del carbono, el método se ha utilizado para fechar muchos artículos, incluyendo muestras de los Rollos del Mar Muerto, el Sudario de Turín, suficientes artefactos egipcios para suministrar una cronología del Egipto dinástico, y Ötzi el Iceman. La atmósfera de la Tierra contiene varios isótopos de carbono, aproximadamente en proporciones constantes. Estos incluyen el principal isótopo estable y un isótopo inestable. A través de la fotosíntesis, las plantas absorben ambas formas de dióxido de carbono en la atmósfera. Cuando un organismo muere, contiene la proporción estándar de 14C a 12C, pero cuando el 14C se desintegra sin posibilidad de reabastecimiento, la proporción de carbono 14 disminuye a una tasa constante conocida.
