Un rainstick es un tubo largo y hueco parcialmente lleno de pequeños guijarros o frijoles que tiene pequeños alfileres o espinas dispuestos helicoidalmente en su superficie interior. Cuando el bastón se levanta, los guijarros caen al otro extremo del tubo, haciendo un sonido que recuerda a la caída de la lluvia. Se denomina 112,1 + 133,1 en el sistema de clasificación Hornbostel-Sachs. El rainstick se cree que han sido inventados por los aztecas y se jugó en la creencia de que podría provocar lluvias torrenciales. Rainsticks se hacen generalmente de cualquiera de varias especies de cactus. Los cactos, que son huecos, se secan al sol. Las espinas se quitan, después se introducen en el cactus como clavos. Los guijarros u otros objetos pequeños se colocan dentro del rainstick, y los extremos se sellan. Un sonido como el agua que cae se hace cuando el rainstick tiene su dirección cambiada a una posición vertical. Dos especies de cactus utilizadas son: Eulychnia acida y Echinopsis pachanoi.
