La dispersión Raman o el efecto Raman / rɑːmən / es la dispersión inelástica de un fotón. Fue descubierto por C. V. Raman y K. S. Krishnan en líquidos, y por G. Landsberg y L. I. Mandelstam en cristales. El efecto había sido predicho teóricamente por Adolf Smekal en 1923. Cuando los fotones se dispersan desde un átomo o molécula, la mayoría de los fotones están dispersos elásticamente, de modo que los fotones dispersos tienen la misma energía que los fotones incidentes. Una pequeña fracción de los fotones dispersos se dispersa por una excitación, con los fotones dispersos que tienen una frecuencia diferente de, y por lo general más baja, que la de los fotones incidentes.
