Las hipérbolas surgen de muchas maneras: como la curva que representa la función en el plano cartesiano, como la apariencia de un círculo visto desde dentro, como el camino seguido por la sombra de la punta de un reloj de sol, como la forma de una órbita abierta, Tal como la órbita de una nave espacial durante una oscilación asistida por gravedad de un planeta o más generalmente cualquier nave espacial que exceda la velocidad de escape del planeta más cercano, como la trayectoria de un cometa de una sola aparición, como la trayectoria de dispersión de una partícula subatómica, y así. Cada rama de la hipérbola tiene dos brazos que se vuelven más rectos hacia fuera del centro de la hipérbola.
